The Island
Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo
A slender ribbon of land roughly 7 kilometers long, Isla Mujeres sits in the turquoise Caribbean just off the coast of Cancún. Life here moves at a gentler pace: golf carts hum along sandy lanes, fishermen bring in the day's catch, and sunsets paint the bay in shades of gold and rose.
Its name — "Island of Women" — dates back to the early 16th century, when Spanish explorers found statues honoring Ixchel, the Maya goddess of the moon, fertility and medicine. Today the island blends that ancient heritage with colorful streets, fresh seafood, artisan shops and some of the calmest, clearest waters in the Mexican Caribbean.
